Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center
Making a Real-Life Difference for Women, Adolescent Girls and Families
Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center provides quality, holistic care to women and adolescent girls ages 12 and older. We treat individuals struggling to overcome eating disorders, substance abuse, mood and anxiety disorders, trauma and post-traumatic-stress-disorder (PTSD), and co-occurring disorders.
Our campus is located on 43 wooded acres just outside Chicago. This peaceful setting offers an ideal environment for women and girls to focus on recovery. Our 164 beds are in five separate lodges. Every lodge has its own dedicated treatment team of nurses, primary and family therapists, dietitians, psychiatrist, and others. This is to ensure each woman or girl receives the individualized care she needs to get well.
Treatment is provided by a multi-disciplinary team consisting of psychiatrists, nurses, therapists, eating disorder specialists and dietitians. These professionals are expert at treating co-occurring disorders. The team is led by Medical Director SooMi Lee-Samuel MD, MA, an adult, adolescent and child board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in eating disorder treatment, addiction recovery, trauma/PTSD, and co-occurring disorders.
Our comprehensive treatment addresses all aspects of the individual, including her mind, body, and spirit. We adhere to the guiding principles of recovery found in the 12 step program and utilize the tools advocated in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). We also incorporate spirituality and family systems into our overall approach to treatment.
Residents participate in individual and group therapy throughout treatment. Additionally, we offer many expressive therapies, including art, dance/movement, yoga and equine therapy. These innovative approaches allow our residents to express thoughts and feelings in a non-verbal fashion. Often what cannot be spoken can be conveyed through body movement and artistic expression.
Timberline Knolls’ Eating Disorder Program recognizes that anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder (BED) don’t just hurt the individual; these diseases have the power to devastate the entire family. This is why family therapy is such an important part of our treatment program. This is conducted through individual family therapy and multi-family group therapy. Because 90% of our residents have experienced some type of trauma before coming to Timberline Knolls, our campus is trauma aware. This means that our clinical staff has received specialized training and is equipped to handle the complexities that accompany trauma.
For our adolescents, we offer TK Academy, an award-winning school located right on campus. The school is staffed by nine educators and a principal. Young residents attend classes each morning, allowing them to learn in a safe and supportive environment while earning credits toward graduation. Our teachers work with each student’s home school to coordinate approved curriculum. In 2013, TK Academy received the NASET School of Excellence Award for the fourth year in a row.
Spirituality is a key component in all treatment at Timberline Knolls. For those requesting Christian programming, we have a dedicated team of Christian primary and family therapists committed to strengthening a resident’s current faith or firmly reconnecting her to God. Residents attend Christian process and experiential groups, receive private pastoral counseling if requested, and attend weekly church services.
Our profound commitment to each resident begins at admission but does not end at discharge. Every woman and girl are provided a detailed discharge plan, which includes therapeutic support, 12 step recovery and transitional living if required. Former residents are strongly encouraged to affiliate with our alumnae program, allowing them to remain connected and receive ongoing support throughout their recovery.
Complete and lasting recovery from anorexia, bulimia, and BED is absolutely possible. A coordinator from our admissions team is available 24/7 to help you and your family. Each of our admissions counselors is a licensed therapist and/or social worker. The entire team takes pride in extending compassion and empathy to all potential residents. Their goal is to help families navigate through insurance plans and other possible barriers to treatment.
