Helpful Resources For Individuals Struggling With Diabulimia

When it comes to eating disorders, people generally think of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder. However, there are other eating disorders that may not be as widely known but are just as severe. Diabulimia is an eating disorder in which people with Type 1 Diabetes directly manipulate their insulin medication for the purpose of controlling weight and/or food.

Because diabulimia is not recognized as a formal diagnosis by medical/psychiatric communities, there is an overall lack of resources available for those who might be struggling with this condition.

Understanding the Need For Support

Diabulimia is an especially complicated disease to manage and control, as it involves an autoimmune that requires strict medication and dietary management to ensure blood glucose control. The hyperfocus on food can be triggering for a person who is susceptible to developing an eating disorder.

Connecting to resources that offer specific interventions for the individual who needs to both manage diabetes in addition to the eating disorder is crucial for effectiveness. While there are many organizations that support the eating disorder suffer, and resources available for those managing diabetes, finding resources that specifically address the needs of diabulimia may seem difficult to find.
