“Contacting and Transforming The Eating Disorder Self” – In-Person CE with Carolyn Costin

An In-Person Event – Presented by Carolyn Costin, MA, MEd, LMFT, CEDS, FAED
Abstract:
Everyone who has an eating disorder was born with a healthy self, but over time, for a variety of reasons, several risk factors have come together to create a perfect storm, resulting in an eating disorder. The individual develops a whole separate ego state that has a different set of thoughts, beliefs and behaviors than they used to have and one they would not hold anyone else to.
Our job as providers is to strengthen the client’s Healthy Self so it can get back in control and put the eating disorder self out of a job. Carolyn Costin, who recovered from her own eating disorder when she was in her late teens, has spent her entire career helping eating disorder clients recover and training others how to do so.
In this presentation, Carolyn will discuss in detail how clinicians can help transform each client’s eating disorder self. Providing specific tools and strategies she has used for over 4 decades, Carolyn will give the audience take-home techniques to use in session. This presentation will include video presentations of segments of real sessions where audience participants can learn from actually watching the concepts in action.
Learning Objectives:
- Explain how the concept of integration supports the recovery process in individuals with eating disorders.
- Identify at least three clinical strategies for working with a client’s eating disorder self and healthy self.
- List at least one example of reframing a client trait from a liability into an asset in the context of recovery.
