Abstract:

Eating disorders are deadly diseases that impact psychosocial functioning and quality of life. Unfortunately, eating disorders are prevalent in many seeking weight loss treatment. Bariatric surgery presents a complex intersection between medical weight loss interventions and disordered eating behaviors.

Up to 60% of patients seeking bariatric surgery report struggling with disordered eating behaviors. However, prevalence is likely underestimated, as screening and assessment tools vary. This presentation aims to equip eating disorder professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to effectively support clients pre- or post-bariatric surgery.

Emphasis will be placed on fostering collaboration with medical providers by understanding standard clinical recommendations while offering non-diet, patient-centered strategies that counter harmful weight-centric messaging. Attendees will analyze typical post-surgical nutrition guidelines through an eating disorder-informed lens, incorporating principles such as individualized meal planning, satiety awareness, and nutritional adequacy.

Finally, the presentation will address the emotional complexities of body image, introducing body compassion to support clients in developing a more accepting relationship with their bodies. Through this integrated approach, clinicians will be better equipped to navigate the nuances of bariatric care within the context of eating disorder treatment.

Objectives:

  • Describe the types of bariatric surgeries commonly performed and identify the unique challenges faced by clients undergoing bariatric surgery who also have eating disorders.
  • Analyze standard post-bariatric nutrition recommendations and integrate eating disorder-informed approaches, including meal planning, satiety awareness, and nutritional adequacy.
  • Evaluate the role of body image and grief work and implement interventions such as body compassion to support client in healing their relationship with their body.
