About The Renfrew Center

The Renfrew Center, celebrating its 40th anniversary, has treated more than 100,000 cisgender adolescent girls and adult women, transgender, and non-binary individuals with eating disorders and provides a comprehensive range of in-person and virtual services across the country. As the first residential eating disorder treatment facility in the United States, The Renfrew Center remains a multi-generation family-owned organization. Renfrew’s family-run structure fosters a culture of warmth and personal connection, ensuring that patients feel like individuals, not numbers, and allows us to prioritize long-term, sustainable improvements in care.

The Renfrew Center offers a full continuum of care, ranging from Residential Treatment, Day Treatment, Intensive Outpatient Programming, and outpatient services. Renfrew’s residential programs, located in Pennsylvania and Florida, offer 24/7 nursing care, and provide a peaceful, healing environment, surrounded by nature and designed to support deep recovery.

Renfrew@Home services, available in more than 30 states throughout the country, allow patients to access day treatment, intensive outpatient, and outpatient services virtually, giving patients the flexibility to receive treatment at the level of intensity that meets their current needs, with the ability to step up or down as their recovery progresses. By offering a seamless transition between levels of care, Renfrew provides a safety net that helps prevent relapses and ensures that each patient receives continuous, comprehensive support throughout their recovery journey, no matter where they are.

All of The Renfrew Center’s programs utilize Renfrew’s Unified Treatment Model for Eating Disorders (UT), which integrates a transdiagnostic, evidence-based cognitive-behavioral approach with Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT), which recognizes the importance of relationships in recovery.

This model addresses not only the eating disorder but also the underlying emotional and psychological factors such as anxiety, depression, and trauma, which often co-occur with disordered eating. By focusing on emotional regulation and relationship-building, the UT offers a holistic and tailored approach to each patient’s needs.

This comprehensive care model stands out because it treats the whole person, ensuring that patients leave with a deep understanding of how to maintain emotional balance and relational health, which are crucial to long-term recovery.

Renfrew’s wide range of specialized programming is designed to meet the unique needs of diverse patient populations. We offer identity-based programs such as our BIPOC, faith-based, midlife, and LGBTQ+ programs, as well as those tailored for adolescents, college students, and individuals struggling with trauma or substance use disorders. This allows us to create safe, inclusive spaces where patients can feel understood and supported by peers who share similar life experiences.

Our approach includes creative arts therapy, occupational therapy, and other forms of expressive therapy, ensuring that patients have multiple outlets for processing their emotions and healing. Few other treatment centers offer this level of specialized, inclusive programming, which sets Renfrew apart in the field of eating disorder care.

At Renfrew, we accept more than 400 insurance plans throughout the country and have dedicated staff who work to design an individualized financial plan, so that treatment is both affordable and accessible.
