Maryland Eating Disorder Centers
Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and other eating disorders don't just impact mental, emotional, and physical health on a personal level. The issues impact the well-being of entire communities.
In Maryland alone, it's estimated that more than half a million residents will experience these conditions at some point in their lives. That total contributes to nearly 1,000 annual ER visits, 435 inpatient hospitalizations, and more than $897 million in lost productivity costs each year.1
Fortunately, there are several Maryland eating disorder centers and therapists who can provide assistance.

While specialized treatment is essential for eating disorder recovery, these programs don't always have to be in-person. Virtual eating disorder treatment has become a common way to care for these conditions.
These programs require only an internet signal, making it much easier for people with mobility or transportation challenges, or those living in underserved areas, to access help. But even patients without these concerns can appreciate the convenience of virtual care.
Most importantly, studies have shown that this method of treatment is just as effective as in-person care in many cases.2
Other Maryland Eating Disorder Resources
You don't have to go to an eating disorder treatment center to receive help and information about eating disorders in Maryland. The state's Department of Health offers general services to all residents, including referrals to treatment programs, help coordinating care with a preferred provider, and other resources.
Some residents may also qualify for Maryland's Medicaid Behavioral Health Services. This program offers more action-based solutions, including evidence-based therapy sessions and medical consultations, as well as referrals for more specific concerns.
Finding the Best Maryland Eating Disorder Centers for You
Maryland residents are fortunate to have access to treatment options in several cities, including Baltimore, Annapolis, Towson, Columbia, and others. But this can also make choosing the best program for you or your loved one feel overwhelming.
It's important to keep a few important considerations in mind, including:
- Level of care: Make sure the treatment program offers the appropriate level of care you or your loved one needs.
- Insurance: This is often the biggest concern. Many major insurance companies cover some extent of eating disorder treatment, but not all of it, and not in all cases. Doing your research before enrolling will likely save a lot of stress down the line.
- Reputation: How long has the center been treating eating disorders? How do they determine when a patient has completed treatment? Do they have any overarching treatment philosophies? These types of questions are paramount for choosing the best Maryland eating disorder centers.
Still, having a positive relationship not just with a therapist or program, but with the concept of eating disorder recovery itself, is perhaps the most important key to lasting recovery. It's what can help maintain hope during tough times, and keep eyes trained on a happier and healthier future.
