ABSTRACT:
Shame and self-criticism often inhibit accountability and impede on both the development of resilience as well as adequate understanding of how eating disorders function. This presentation explores the role shame and self- criticism play in our clients’ stuck-ness and provides a compelling antidote to both – compassion. We will provide an overview of Compassion Focused Therapy, highlighting the potential missing link in eating disorder recovery, which is the development and utilization of compassion. Research highlights the relationship between compassion, the vagus nerve and the autonomic nervous system, allowing us to utilize specific compassion-based interventions to target shame and self-criticism. This includes imagery practices, work within the Three Circles Model of affect regulation, and the Compassion Focused Therapy case formulation. These interventions help with increasing both top-down and bottom-up processing and have clear intersectionality with the premise and practices of Polyvagal Theory. This allows Compassion Focused Therapy to compliment a variety of treatment modalities, increasing capability and accountability in our client’s recovery process.
OBJECTIVES:
Understand shame and self-criticism through an evolutionary biopsychosocial lens.
Identify the ways in which shame and self-criticism perpetuate eating disorder engagement through a Compassion Focused Therapy and Polyvagal Theory framework.
Discuss and practice Compassion Focused Therapy interventions for the reduction of shame and self-criticism.
