ABSTRACT: This presentation explores how to utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy through the lens of Compassion Focused Therapy in order to help bridge the gap between approaches and support treating individuals in a more holistic way. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has been proven to be effective for the treatment of eating disorders along with other co-occurring disorders utilizing a top down approach to treatment. Compassion Focused Therapy brings in psychoeducation and information from our bodies utilizing a bottom up approach. We will do a brief overview of the Compassion Focused Therapy case conceptualization in addition to reviewing one of the key concepts of the approach, the Three Circles Model of affect regulation. We will review the history of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in addition to key concepts and interventions through the lens of Compassion Focused Therapy. The presentation shows how Compassion Focused Therapy can complement a wide variety of treatment modalities, including commonly used evidenced based practices.
