It is truly a gift to celebrate the bodies we have. With her head held high, adorned with what feels like a fancy headscarf or hat, I feel her sense of joy in movement. She is an inspiration to dance and move with even greater freedom and abandon that everybody deserves!

When this woman emerged I connected with what felt like a childlike wonder in her expression and pose. I love the inspiration to move beyond childhood with a sense of curiosity and surprise; truly a gift to live life fully taking risks and creating adventure.

I feel a deep commitment and passion for embracing the curves that are uniquely feminine and naturally beautiful. Enveloping ourselves, our bodies and each other in love and deep respect is a gift we all deserve.

This piece reminds me that feminine energy can embody the strength and power of the warrior and the intuitive beauty of the goddess self. We can choose to embrace and honor the emotions, bodies, and dreams of the divine feminine.

I am often aware of the dualities that exist in life; love and hate, stillness and movement, happy and sad…light and dark. The light of the figure is juxtaposed with the darkness of the black background and heat of the red seat; a reminder of the fluidity of the human condition.

Light and Shadow - Robin OkunLight and Shadow

This painting activates my awareness of the darkness or shadow and the light inherent in the human condition. I find love and compassion seems to emerge through mindfully accepting whatever emerges.

Moving - Robin OkunMoving
2014
24”x 18”x¾”
$825.00

This was a really fun piece to paint. I was actually in a class and the teacher insisted we swap out our brushes for a tree branch. Let’s just say I was less than enthusiastic about the assignment. I like to move through life by listening to my inner voices and intuition. However, in this case, I was pleased I accepted the challenge. I actually love the abstract quality and roughness of line that delineates the figure and the experience definitely impacted my use of line in subsequent work. Breaking out of old patterns can feel challenging and exhilarating as well as providing opportunities for change!

Sitting - Robin OkunSitting

Sitting with difficult feelings, thoughts and memories can be challenging. Through practice, often referred to as mindfulness, this can become an effective strategy to live more comfortably with the realities of life in our minds and bodies. This piece activates a sense of calm for me and is a reminder of this important process.

Wall Flower - Robin OkunWallflower

I find power in reframing ideas, struggles, and what is defined or felt as weakness. As a painter I use images to convey the reframe; as therapists we use language. Most of us have had the experience of feeling like a wallflower or witnessing another as a wallflower in a group context. It can be uncomfortable at best and painful at worst. For me, this painting communicates a sense of beauty; a figure becoming a lovely flower adorning the wall. And we can be reminded that flowers flourish with love and attention.

Wrapped (up) in feeling, thought, one’s self, another.
We can wrap to conceal, surprise, comfort, or hide…
Does this painting depict one person or two or Are we looking at one person or two? I actually don’t have the answers. I am wrapped up in the ambiguity of the painting and what often feels like the ambiguity of life.
