Support Groups for Eating Disorders
There is a support group out there for you. Imagine the relief that comes when you can share your thoughts and feelings with people who really know what you are going through.
Support groups exist for a reason: because people need them. And when anorexia, bulimia, compulsive overeating or binge eating disorder are part of the equation, this need is not confined to any one person. This is because eating disorders are so difficult and so challenging. Say a man has a wife who is anorexic, or a mother has a daughter who is bulimic. Both the man and the mother are standing by while someone they love routinely engages in bizarre, unhealthy behaviors. He watches his wife waste away to nothing; she hears her daughter vomiting in the bathroom. Neither one of them can stop the behaviors or help the person they love. Each feels impotent, frustrated and upset.
Who can possibly understand what these two people are going through? The answer is...others who are experiencing the same thing.
Whether a parent, a sibling, a friend, or the person with the disorder, it is incredibly helpful to be surrounded by people who not only understand, but can provide comfort.
Remember...There is a support group out there for you. Imagine the relief that comes when you can share your thoughts and feelings with people who really know what you are going through. Support groups are often an invaluable component of successful eating disorder treatment.

Anorexics and Bulimics Anonymous is a fellowship of individuals whose primary purpose is to find and maintain recovery in our eating practices, and to help others gain recovery. ABA is not allied or affiliated with any other 12-step fellowship or organization. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop unhealthy eating practices. Eating Disorders Anonymous (EDA)
EDA
is a fellowship of individuals who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problems and help others to recover from their eating disorders. People can and do fully recover from having an eating disorder. In EDA, we help one another identify and claim milestones of recovery.
The only requirement for membership is a desire to recover from an eating disorder. There are no dues or fees for EDA membership. We are self-supporting through our own contributions. EDA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution. EDA does not wish to engage in any controversy. We neither endorse nor oppose any causes.
Our primary purpose is to recover from our eating disorders and to carry this message of recovery to others with eating disorders. In EDA, we try to focus on the solution, not the problem. Solutions have to do with recognizing life choices and making them responsibly. Diets and weight management techniques do not solve our thinking problems. EDA endorses sound nutrition and discourages any form of rigidity around food. ** Balance – not abstinence -- is our goal. **

A process-oriented group for women and men struggling with disordered eating. In each meeting we explore the underlying conflicts and issues that contribute to the behavior. Whether you are turning to or against food, it's a "symptom" of the problem (although it can sure feel like "the" problem). Most people in the group are struggling with bulimia or binge eating, but the group is open to anyone with a difficult relationship to food.
Group meets Saturday mornings from 9:00am-10:15am.

Eating Disorder Center of Denver Introduces New Binge Eating Support Group
In January, the Eating Disorder Center of Denver (EDCD) introduced a Binge Eating program to the Rocky Mountain area. Because of the overwhelming response we have had to our Binge Eating program, the Eating Disorder Center of Denver is proud to announce the arrival of our Outpatient Binge Eating Disorder support group. Currently in our fifth cycle of patients, this support group will complement our BED treatment program; however, anyone is invited to attend. We have heard from several individuals who were interested in a Binge Eating Support Group, and to meet the needs of the community, the group has been initiated.
This group will be a process-oriented group based on Irvin D. Yalom’s Curative Factors. The group will meet weekly on Tuesday nights from 6-7:30pm at the Eating Disorder Center of Denver. Cost for the group is $20.
For additional information regarding this support group or other outpatient groups please call, 303-771-0861, visit www.edcdenver.com.

AUSTIN
Parent & Loved Ones Support Group - 2nd Sat. of each month; 10am - noon
The Facilitator of this group, Carolyn Dower, is a parent of a now fully recovered child who fought tirelessly through a devastating eating disorder. She and her family know first-hand what it's like to feel alone and helpless in trying desperately to keep their own daughter alive. Carolyn is an advocate, a mountain of compassion and passionate about walking with others through the minefield of ED by sharing her own story and experience. Caroline says:"I've experienced the deep, hopeless despair of the person suffering with the disease. I've seen grieving parents, spouses and siblings experience the agony of helplessly watching a sister, brother, daughter, son , husband or wife self-destructing. I've seen whole families of every income level, ethnicity and educational background who struggle and fail to deal with this very difficult and deadly disease on their own, [not because they aren't trying or are incompetent], but because treating an eating disorder takes expert care. This affliction is not something these people asked for. They did not choose this path."
If you have a loved-one suffering with an eating disorder, this group is for you! Find support and guidance from others who understand. Intuitive Eating: Make Peace with Food
A 12-Week Group to Address Emotional Eating Faciliated by: Rachel Eddins, M.Ed., LPC, CGP
If you have ever struggled with the ups and downs of dieting, waged "diet-war" on your body, or have lost touch with true hunger and fullness, it is time to listen to your body and learn how to eat intuitively. Individuals with emotional eating issues can learn to create a healthy relationship with their food, mind, and body by ditching the diet mentality, tuning in to body cues, and honoring emotions without using food.
The group curriculum will be based directly on the work of Evelyn Tribole, M.S., R.D. and Elyse Resch M.S., R.D., F.A.D.A and will cover the 10 core principals described in their book, Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program that Works.
Groups start in September, February and June, Wednesdays 11:45-1pm and Thursdays 5:30-6:45pm, and last 12 weeks. Cost: $50 per session. Ongoing emotional eating support groups are also available.
