Binge Eating Disorder: What You Need To Know
By Remuda Ranch
Binge eating is not what families do at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner; it is not having a second dish of ice cream because it's your favorite flavor; it's not over-indulging in fried chicken while visiting someone down South.
Binge eating is a serious disorder that affects 3-5% of American men and women. Binge eating involves consuming a great deal of food, in an uncontrolled and/or rapid manner, and eating beyond the point of fullness. Binge eating is not motivated by physiological hunger. It is driven by psychological issues, such as fear of failure or rejection, unmet expectations, or feeling inadequate. Binges may be spontaneous or planned. No purging is involved, but there may be sporadic fasting or repeat dieting. To have the diagnosis of binge-eating disorder, the behavior must occur at least twice a week for six months. But even with less frequency, binge eating can be a serious problem.
Eating Disorders and MyPyramid.gov: A Useful Tool for Recovery
By Jacquelyn Ekern, MS, LPC, Founder and Director of Eating Disorder Hope and Debra Cooper, Expert Writer on eating disorders
Tools play an important role in many aspects of life. A carpenter without a hammer cannot drive nails into a wall. An artist without a paintbrush is destined to stare at a blank canvas. In order for many tasks to be completed correctly, the right tools must be utilized.
Similarly, a variety of tools are critical to successful recovery from an eating disorder. Treatment, either outpatient or inpatient, is arguably the most important tool. A skilled treatment team can help a woman or girl understand the complex factors that may have contributed to the advent of her eating disorder. These include certain personality traits, a genetic predisposition, trauma, and such environmental factors as media influence, peer pressure and family dynamics. This support and information, combined with tools to deal more effectively with stress, feelings and relationships, can empower the eating disorder suffer to take steps toward health and healing. Additional tools such as therapeutic support groups, mindfulness, artistic expression, self-help books and spiritual connections, can provide important insight, coping strategies and support.
Featured Eating Disorder Non Profit Organization: Eating Disorders Coalition
The Eating Disorders Coalition for Research, Policy & Action (EDC) is honored to serve as the Eating Disorders community's voice on Capitol Hill, advocating for federal policy regarding eating disorders and body image issues. The EDC is a coalition of ED organizations working together in Washington, D.C. to increase awareness, educate policymakers, and promote understanding about the disabling and life-threatening effects of eating disorders.
The EDC's primary mission is to advance the federal recognition of eating disorders as a public health priority, specifically through the creation of federal policy addressing eating disorders. This is being accomplished through the FREED Act (the Federal Response to Eliminate Eating Disorders). The FREED Act is the first comprehensive eating disorders bill in the History of Congress! The bill was conceptualized and drafted with input from dozens of eating disorder organizations and experts from around the country.
The FREED Act has three main components: Research, Education and Prevention and Treatment. Among the many initiatives the FREED Act addresses are included: the creating of Centers of Excellence that will fill the current gap in eating disorders research; grant programs to improve the training of health and school professionals to appropriately identify and respond to eating disorders; requiring insurance companies to reimburse for eating disorders treatment on par with physical illnesses; studying the effects of BMI "report cards".
Eating Disorder Hope encourages all individuals concerned with eating disorders to support the efforts of the Eating Disorder Coalition. This can be accomplished by becoming a member of the EDC, donating to the efforts of the EDC, writing a letter to your legislator in support of the FREED Act, and by attending the next National Lobby Day that the EDC coordinates on Capitol Hill.

The EATING DISORDER TREATMENT PROGRAM at SeaSide Palm Beach specializes in helping individuals who suffer from a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders, which is when an individual suffers simultaneously from both a psychiatric disorder (like an eating disorder) as well as a substance abuse problem (like alcohol abuse or drug abuse).
Most people are very surprised to learn that eating disorders have little to do with food. Especially when one considers that many people who suffer from eating disorders actually have an unhealthy obsession with food. In the majority of cases, eating disorders have more to do with a lack of emotional well-being resulting from their inability to identify and communicate their own needs and wants effectively to others.

Happy for the Rest of Your Life
By Dr. Gregory L. Jantz with Ann McMurray @www.aplaceofhope.com
Okay, maybe the title is a little presumptuous, but it's intriguing also, isn't it? (Happy for the Rest of Your Life – is that really possible? And is that happiness for all of life or just parts of it? What does he mean by happy? Giddiness? Contentment? Cheerfulness? Glee? Delight? Those aren't words I normally associate with my life!)
Deep down, though, doesn't everyone want to be happy for life? While there may be one or two hiding out somewhere, reveling in despair, most people want to be happy. They may not, deep down, think it's possible but it's still a deep-seated desire – a sort of wishful thinking, someday, maybe, if only, kind of desire. So, some may feel Happy for the Rest of Your Life is a bit presumptuous as a title; others may feel Happy for the Rest of Your, as a concept, is a bit presumptuous for your own life. But the Happy in the title isn't just some sort of generic happiness for some unnamed person's life; it's meant for you, today, in your own life, right in the midst of whatever circumstances you find yourself in. It is possible but it's not necessarily easy.
