You gave me hope.

People like you who have confronted and overcome challenges in life gave me hope. Those who have battled addictions, triumphed over abuse, and survived broken hearts gave me hope.

My hope deepened when I met men and women who had found freedom from anorexia and bulimia. Maybe, just maybe, I could recover from my eating disorder.

True hope began when I connected with others. My friend in recovery from alcoholism found that hope only started for him when he realized he could not do it alone. I discovered this to be true in my recovery from anorexia and bulimia. When I attempted to make changes in my unhealthy behaviors alone within the walls of my silent apartment, I only grew worse. I felt hopeless.

As my passion for life faded, I became honest with myself. If there is even the slightest chance for me to change my behaviors with food, I am going to have to tell someone. I need to reach out for help. I did not recognize that I was also reaching for hope.....

Susan B. Krevoy Eating Disorders Program

Eating Disorder Referral

If you are struggling with an eating disorder and need more than individual therapy but less than inpatient or residential treatment, the Susan B. Krevoy Eating Disorders Program may be the right place for you. We are a low fee, individualized, outpatient program with an emphasis on working with the entire person. Food and eating patterns frequently reflect the expression of unmet needs. Our program consists of individual, group and family therapy to discover and help you work through these underlying issues. Also included is nutritional counseling to differentiate between physical and psychological hunger, art therapy, yoga and meditation, and cognitive-behavioral groups on topics such as self-esteem, body image and communication skills. Our compassionate and experienced psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage family therapists, social workers, registered dieticians, certified art therapists, certified yoga instructor, and post doctoral fellows provide a safe, nurturing environment that promotes healing. We begin with a free comprehensive assessment to determine how the disordered eating pattern fits into your life and what purpose(s) it serves. Your case manager will then work with you to devise a three or four-evening/week individualized program that will be structured to meet your needs. When you are ready to leave the program, we offer an after-care group that provides continued support during the transition period. Our goal is to support you as you discover the meaning behind your eating disorder, heal the past and develop skills that will help you create a happy and healthy future. Our program is covered by most insurance plans and we offer help to the uninsured on a sliding scale. If you feel trapped by an eating disorder, contact us today for a free assessment. There is hope. With help, you can heal. Let us help you open the door to recovery.

12 Weeks to Mindful Eating
By Donald Altman, M.A.

When working with clients, I often like to share with them the idea that a mindful approach shifts one's perspective so that food can be viewed as a "solution" rather than as a "problem." They usually respond positively and with a sense of relief. Why? I think it may be because it gives them hope, as well as permission to let go of their symptoms—even if for a moment. And, it may give them some space from the pervasive idea that a struggle with food is too difficult to be overcome. Besides, we all know how easily food can be abused. Writer Rita Mae Brown states this very nicely when she says, "Lead me not into temptation; I can find the way myself."

Fortunately, once food becomes viewed less judgmentally and as a possible solution, hope is just around the corner. Turning that corner, however, takes a lot of time, effort, and discipline. A mindfulness approach to food is not a shortcut. In fact, it may be the long road to making peace with food and hunger and self-care. However, this is one case where a long road with several detours may make for a richer and more meaningful journey. Mindfulness can be taught in numerous ways and with endless variations. The one constant, perhaps, is that a mindful approach changes the eater's relationship with food. And that makes all the difference.

A relationship perspective changes the context and perspective from which an eater looks at food. Food ceases to be viewed simply in terms of "good" or "bad." Rather, food becomes connected to one's feelings, body, and the world at large. It means awakening to the deeper purpose of food, as well as to the underlying desires and cravings for it.

There are three advantages to observing and describing one's relationship with food. First, is a fundamental awareness of patterns and behaviors. For example, I ask people to act as detectives (and not as hanging judges!) in their own lives as they pay attention to questions such as: Do you tend to eat a particular way in the morning or evening? Do you use food as a reward? Do you use food as a way to signal others for attention? Only then, with greater awareness, can someone begin to envision a new path.

A second advantage of knowing one's food relationship is that it generates compassion—towards oneself and all those who struggle with food. Compassion means, from the Latin, "to be with suffering." And really, food is a universal relationship that we all have, as physical beings trying to bring ourselves into harmony with our spiritual nature.

Thirdly, awareness of a food relationship can shed light on other life relationships, as well as the relationship one has with her/him self. For example, one who continually skips meals or eats fast food, might ask: What other things in my life am I skipping over or indulging in like a fast food meal?

Best of all, when mindful eating transforms food into a potential solution, the relationship to food has new and forgiving space in which to grow and change—and where all things are possible. Or, as the comedian Groucho Marx once said, "Man does not live by bread alone. Every now and then he needs a cookie."

Donald Altman, M.A., is a mental health counselor, former Buddhist monk, and award-winning writer. He developed the first home-study mindful eating course with online video, The 12-Weeks to Mindful Eating Program, as well as author of Meal By Meal: 365 Daily Meditations for Finding Balance Through Mindful Eating, Art of the Inner Meal, and Living Kindness. Compelling New Book: COMES THE DARKNESS, COMES THE LIGHT...by Vanessa Vega

COMES THE DARKNESS, COMES THE LIGHT

A Moving, Insightful First-Person Account of Self-Injury

"The darkness started coming for me on Monday. Much like the flu, it hit the base of my spine first. The slight but undeniable tingling that just won't go away. I have a chill to my bones that I cannot seem to shake, even though I take two to three hot baths a day…By Thursday I know what is going to happen and feel powerless to fight it. I read a book. Flip through a magazine. Flip channels on the television. Anything to take my mind off what is to come. The darkness waits for me and I can't seem to escape. By Friday I have shut down…I am so tired. I don't want to do this…As I walk in the door, I pray for a phone message, any message, any note or urgent plea for my help. Anything to save me from the darkness—to save me from myself… But today there is only the darkness and it waits for me. The darkness has come and it's time."

In COMES THE DARKNESS, COMES THE LIGHT: A Memoir of Cutting, Healing, and Hope (AMACOM Books; May 15, 2007; $21.95 Hardcover), Vanessa Vega takes readers inside her mind and along her journey as she struggles against an exhausting and shameful secret ritual. For most of her life, more than thirty years, Vega battled a terrible compulsion to injure herself. It was the only way she was able to relieve her overwhelming feelings of anxiety and control her pain.

As a daily reminder of why it's best to live life without an eating disorder (a.k.a. Ed), jewelry designer, Sue Gillerlain, and Jenni Schaefer, author of Life Without Ed: How One Woman Declared Independence from Her Eating Disorder and How You Can Too(McGraw-Hill), teamed up to create a two-sided sterling silver charm inscribed with the words, "Life Without Ed.™"

"We developed this charm together to support recovery from eating disorders and to counteract jewelry now available that actuallypromotes eating disorders such as "pro-ana" bracelets," says Schaefer, who was featured on "Entertainment Tonight" and "Dr. Phil." "People who identify themselves as pro-ana wear color-coded bracelets to signify their disease and to be able to identify each other at first glance."

Ten percent of the sale of each Life Without Ed™ charm and Life Without Ed™ bracelet and necklace is donated to the Seattle-based National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) to promote awareness, education and helpline support.

"It's exciting to see two individuals who are recovering from their own eating disorders able to help others through their passions in jewelry design and writing," says Lynn Grefe, CEO, NEDA. "We're delighted to be a part of Sue and Jenni's Life Without Ed™ jewelry collection."

The rectangular sterling silver charm weighs 2 grams and is two-sided. On one side of the diminutive charm, a hand-drawn flower, signifying personal growth, is the focal point. On the back of the charm, the phrase "Life Without Ed™" appears along side a smaller flower. Each charm is placed on a sterling silver jump ring along with a single freshwater pearl to symbolize the wisdom, "You do better when you know better." All charms are cast and finished by hand in the United States. All sterling silver chains are made in the United States.

The sterling silver Life Without Ed™ charm with pearl ($32); sterling silver bracelet with charm and pearl ($56); and sterling silver necklace with charm and pearl ($54) can all be purchased at online at www.sarah-kate.com or www.jennischaefer.com or by calling Sue Gillerlain at (630) 482-9140. Wholesale pricing for retailers is also available.
