Susan B. Krevoy Eating Disorders Program

Susan B. Krevoy Eating Disorders Program

If you are struggling with an eating disorder and need more than individual therapy but less than inpatient or residential treatment, the Susan B. Krevoy Eating Disorders Program may be the right place for you. We are a low fee, individualized, outpatient program with an emphasis on working with the entire person. Food and eating patterns frequently reflect the expression of unmet needs. Our program consists of individual, group and family therapy to discover and help you work through these underlying issues. Also included is nutritional counseling to differentiate between physical and psychological hunger, art therapy, yoga and meditation, and cognitive-behavioral groups on topics such as self-esteem, body image and communication skills. Our compassionate and experienced psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage family therapists, social workers, registered dieticians, certified art therapists, certified yoga instructor, and post doctoral fellows provide a safe, nurturing environment that promotes healing. We begin with a free comprehensive assessment to determine how the disordered eating pattern fits into your life and what purpose(s) it serves. Your case manager will then work with you to devise a three or four-evening/week individualized program that will be structured to meet your needs. When you are ready to leave the program, we offer an after-care group that provides continued support during the transition period. Our goal is to support you as you discover the meaning behind your eating disorder, heal the past and develop skills that will help you create a happy and healthy future. Our program is covered by most insurance plans and we offer help to the uninsured on a sliding scale. If you feel trapped by an eating disorder, contact us today for a free assessment. There is hope. With help, you can heal. Let us help you open the door to recovery.

Why do we resist change?

Why is repetition so compelling to intelligent people while it is so illogical? Why will an adult repeat behavior that doesn't work, often do it harder, and expect a different result? Changing behavior is difficult, even when it means the difference between life and death. In studies of coronary bypass patients, when their lives are at risk unless they adopt healthier lifestyles, only one in nine changes their habits.

Part of the answer to this question is in our minds. There is something secure and familiar about repetition. We repeat the same story because we know what the outcome will be. Predictability masquerades as effectiveness. The invisible decisions that we make daily become camouflaged as habits, our collection of repetitions. Change from a familiar pattern creates uncertainty, even anxiety. The easiest and fastest way to end this anxiety is to go back to the familiar: the old story. There is always the pull of the old and the fear of the new.

Abigail Natenshon: The Parent Connection in Eating Disorders

The Parent Connection in Eating Disorders
Recovery: Squeaking the Recovery Wheel
Part One
By Abigail Natenshon
*Excerpted from When Your Child Has an Eating Disorder: A Step-by-Step Workbook for Parents and Other Caregivers, Natenshon, JBP 1999

Ninety percent of eating disordered victims are adolescents living at home with parents and families. Symptoms of these disorders (along with their recovery) are an integral part of daily living, unfolding before parents' eyes virtually everywhere..... at the dinner table, in bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchens, in conversation and in attitudes. Parents and families become victims of these diseases simply by virtue of living alongside the eating disorder phenomenon.

Even the most competent and adept parents find themselves feeling defeated, at a loss for what to think, how to behave and how to support their child in the throes of this mystifying disease. Believing that they are the cause of their child's disorder, they assume that by intervening they could make an already bad situation worse. Parents fear that the very mention of food or weight could inspire an eating disorder in their healthy child, particularly in light of the statistic that 80% of children in grades three to six express dissatisfaction with their bodies, and that eating disorders have become the disease of choice for the expression of anxiety in youth today.

Announcement: New Non-Clinical Extended Care Living Home Available

Shoreline Center for Eating Disorder Treatment announces the opening of Satori House.

Satori House is a non-clinical extended care living home for those in recovery from all forms of eating disorders. It evolved out of an overwhelming need to provide individuals coming out of residential treatment facilities with a supportive living environment, which could help them gradually integrate back into their lives and independent living settings. This approach when available, can significantly reduce the chance of relapse. We provide 24 hour support, semi-structured therapeutic and recreational activities as well as community meals and meetings. Guests are supported by a recovery coach, who will work closely with their outpatient treatment team, in defining goals and challenges to be targeted during their stay.

Satori House can also be used in combination with our Eating Disorder Intensive Outpatient Program. This program provides 13 hours of individual, group and expressive therapies a week including meals and snacks. The program is within walking distance to Satori House and allows for intensive treatment and supportive living for those not needing a higher level of care.

Both Satori House and Shoreline Treatment Center are located in an upscale neighborhood in Long Beach, California, with close access to Cal State Long Beach, shopping, the beach and public transportation.

For more information on these or any other of our treatment programs, please call our intake department at (562) 434-6007, or visit our website at www.shoreline-eatingdisorders.com
