The Eating Disorder Program at Linden Oaks is led by an exceptional team of psychiatrists and psychologists who effectively blend evidence based treatment with empathic, individualized care. Linden Oaks is able to safely manage complex medical and nutritional needs in the inpatient program while helping patients identify core issues behind the eating disorder behavior. In the partial hospitalization programs, patients learn skills that teach them how to manage and cope with day to day issues that trigger eating disorder behaviors. Experiential outings and family groups allow patients to practice skills along the way while still in a supportive environment. For those patients who need additional support, there is Arabella House, a residential care home for up to eight women who are seriously motivated but still need a therapeutic living environment while they continue the recovery journey. Linden Oaks at Edward is a 110 bed behavioral health facility that provides comprehensive services to adults and adolescents. We are proud to provide patient and family centered care by involving patients and families in program planning and facility design. Linden Oaks was acknowledged by the Joint Commission as a center of excellence and is one of the only behavioral health hospitals in the country to receive disease specific certification in the treatment of eating disorders, self injury, chemical dependency, and geriatrics.

Healing Environment Gets to the Heart of Pediatric Eating Disorders

Within just six months of launching the new treatment program at Rogers Memorial Hospital, Dr. Tracey Cornella-Carlson is seeing more children and families enjoy a quality of life that seemed lost within the tight grip of an eating disorder. Even as young as fourth grade, children are becoming concerned with calories and fat grams and subjected to emotional bullying about their appearance. Cornella-Carlson said that parents come to Rogers Memorial Hospital, not just because they are worried about their child's health, but because they feel that they have lost their child emotionally. The disorder affects the child's ability to participate in day-to-day activities with their friends and families. The new child and adolescent inpatient program was developed under her leadership to provide a safe, nurturing environment where children and teens could be treated for medical and emotional stability by a specialized team comprised of physicians, dietitians, therapists, nurses, and other trained professionals.

Body Checking and Eating Disorders

By: Debra Cooper
Remuda Ranch Programs for Eating and Anxiety Disorders
www.remudaranch.com

Women and girls struggling with anorexia and bulimia often exhibit telltale signs of these disorders. Anorexia is sometimes easy to recognize because the impact of the disorder is so visible. Due to severe weight loss, those with anorexia may look ill. Yet some with anorexia conceal their extreme thinness under layers of clothing and therefore remain less noticeable to other people. Bulimia is even more difficult to detect, unless you are aware of the warning signs, such as scrapes or bruising on the fingers or swollen glands in the neck. It is therefore worth knowing about a more subtle sign of both eating disorders—body and weight checking.

The truth is, everyone checks their body on occasion; perhaps it's taking note of how clothes fit or grabbing a quick peek at the reflection in a store window. However, those with eating disorders repeatedly check their bodies in ways that are unusual. In fact, for these people, body and weight checking becomes second nature. Often individuals with eating disorders don't even realize they're doing it. Typically, they check to feel for fatness, bones and any physical change in their body. And the problem is, this checking rarely results in anything positive. These are not people who glance in the mirror and think, "I really look good today." On the contrary, due to low self-esteem and negative body issues, they will undoubtedly say to themselves, "I am fat," or "This sweater makes me look huge."

Krevoy Eating Disorders Program may be the right place for you. We are a low fee, individualized, outpatient program with an emphasis on working with the entire person. Telephone Number: 212-543-5316
Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center are trying to understand the causes of Bulimia Nervosa. We are recruiting girls (13-19 years) who have problems with binge-eating and purging. The study involves monetary compensation ($100) and options for treatment, free of charge. For more information, please call Laura at 212-543-5316 or email her at lb2518@columbia.edu.

Binge Eating Disorder Research Participants Needed

People with binge eating disorder (BED) are needed for a research study in the area of Boston, MA. In this study we are testing whether enhancing brain activity using noninvasive brain stimulation can improve core symptoms of BED and examine the mechanisms involved. We use repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a technique that allows modulation of brain activity of a targeted brain area in humans, in a safe and noninvasive way (an rTMS device was approved by the FDA for the treatment of depression last year). Further details on rTMS can be found at the website of our laboratory: http://tmslab.org.
