Eating Disorder Coalition Celebrates Parity Victory!
WASHINGTON, D.C., October 3, 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE : VICTORY IN PASSING MENTAL HEALTH PARITY!
The EDC applauds Congress for their commitment to eliminating discrimination in health care coverage against people suffering from mental disorders. After tireless negotiations between differing House and Senate versions, both chambers came together to pass mental health parity this year. This bill requires group health plans that currently offer coverage for mental health and substance-use disorders to provide those benefits in the same manner as benefits provided to all other medical and surgical procedures covered under the plan. It also prohibits group health plans from imposing discriminatory annual/lifetime dollar limits, copays and deductibles, or day and visit limits unless similar limitations or requirements are imposed for other medical and surgical benefits.
"Everyday we get calls from parents whose kids are on the verge of death due to an eating disorder yet they cannot get their health insurance companies to pay for this life saving treatment. This law will change that." says Jeanine Cogan, EDC Policy Director. The EDC was part of a broad based coalition of organizations actively advocating for the strongest mental health parity bill that could pass Congress this year. EDC President Kitty Westin was invited to testify before Congress to help make the case for a strong mental health parity bill and she spent many days in Washington DC lobbying with fellow advocates including David Wellstone, son of the late Senator Paul Wellstone who first introduced parity legislation in 1996, Kitty states, "I am thrilled that we finally have a mental health parity bill that will close some of the loopholes in the earlier version. It was a long hard battle and we are proud that we played a key role in passing a bill that will help millions of people each year."
There were two notable victories of this advocacy. First the parity bill extends coverage to out-of-network providers if that same coverage is available for physical illnesses. Thus, if out-of-network benefits are extended to medical and surgical benefits under the plan, out-of-network benefits are extended to mental health and addictive disorders in a manner that is no more restrictive than the application of the terms and conditions with respect to the medical or surgical benefits as well.
Second it ensures that stronger state parity laws already existing remain intact. Whereas this parity law is similar to the one passed in 1996 in terms of the definition of mental illnesses, the EDC hoped to strengthen that definition by explicitly requiring all mental illnesses in the DSM to be covered. This was one of the provisions which did not survive negotiations. As a next step, the EDC will continue to advocate for provisions that require coverage for eating disorders treatment.
As a compromise for conceding on the DSM, this bill directs the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to provide a report to Congress within three years of enactment of the bill on:
Specific coverage rates for all mental health and substance use disorder conditions; Which diagnoses are most commonly covered or excluded; Whether implementation of the Act has affected trends in coverage or exclusion of mental health and substance use disorder conditions; and the impact of covering or excluding specific diagnoses on participants and enrollees' health, their health care coverage and the cost of delivering care.
While plans will retain the right to manage the benefit as they see fit and determine the scope of coverage, plans will have to provide to plan participants and employers the terms and conditions of the medical necessity criteria used by the plan upon request.

Susan B. Krevoy Eating Disorders Program
If you are struggling with an eating disorder and need more than individual therapy but less than inpatient or residential treatment, the Susan B. Krevoy Eating Disorders Program may be the right place for you. We are a low fee, individualized, outpatient program with an emphasis on working with the entire person. Food and eating patterns frequently reflect the expression of unmet needs. Our program consists of individual, group and family therapy to discover and help you work through these underlying issues. Also included is nutritional counseling to differentiate between physical and psychological hunger, art therapy, yoga and meditation, and cognitive-behavioral groups on topics such as self-esteem, body image and communication skills. Our compassionate and experienced psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage family therapists, social workers, registered dieticians, certified art therapists, certified yoga instructor, and post doctoral fellows provide a safe, nurturing environment that promotes healing. We begin with a free comprehensive assessment to determine how the disordered eating pattern fits into your life and what purpose(s) it serves. Your case manager will then work with you to devise a three or four-evening/week individualized program that will be structured to meet your needs. When you are ready to leave the program, we offer an after-care group that provides continued support during the transition period. Our goal is to support you as you discover the meaning behind your eating disorder, heal the past and develop skills that will help you create a happy and healthy future. Our program is covered by most insurance plans and we offer help to the uninsured on a sliding scale. If you feel trapped by an eating disorder, contact us today for a free assessment. There is hope. With help, you can heal. Let us help you open the door to recovery.

Self Harm Article: Provided by Rader Programs
"Everything hurts so much inside and my thoughts are so overwhelming yet so distant, whirling about and never leaving me... I argue with my rational self and the self that's really hurting and doesn't want to carry on anymore. I do cut myself. I don't cut to die, I don't cut for attention, I cut because it makes me feel better for just a few minutes. It's like a drug- instant relief. Everything's okay for a while. The world stands still and my mind feels cleared. It's difficult to explain. I want to cry so badly sometimes, and I can't...and I literally ache inside; the feeling is unbearable and when I cut myself some of the pressure and hurt from inside is released. I know it's stupid; I know it's wrong, but sometimes it's the only thing that gets me through."

Women of Substance Featured Recovery Story.....Lindsey Cohen
Lindsey Hall Cohn had bulimia for nine years. This was in the 1970s when no one talked about eating disorders and the word bulimia was practically unknown. Like many other women, she believed she was suffering alone.
"I really had no idea anyone else in the world had the problem. It wasn't publicized at that time," she says.
Then, a dream changed her life. In it was a woman named Gürze.
"I felt compelled to make a doll out of that woman from my dream. Don't ask me why! She was very funny looking, with long legs and bright red lips, and her hands were enormous! But there was something about the creative process that touched something very deep inside me. That something became the foundation of my recovery."
Lindsey made more dolls, all life-sized, one-of-a-kind, soft sculptures. She started a business, called Gürze Designs, and began to haunt thrift stores to find just the right outfits to create unique characters. Then, on a trip to New York, as she was waiting for a light with two of the huge dolls hanging out of her backpack, someone standing next to her offered to buy them both.
"For someone whose bulimia had taken control, this was a shock. At the time, I had no job, so all of a sudden I discovered a purpose in life, to create these funny-looking dolls which made people laugh—myself included. Life was getting lighter."
