Italy launches campaign against anorexia(2008) @ CBC News

Italian authorities are mounting a $1.5 million US campaign against a growing epidemic of anorexia and other eating disorders in a country known for its fashion industry and image consciousness.

The Italian Ministries of Health and Sports are aiming the project at schools and the media, providing guidelines for magazines, television, radio and Internet sites to discourage ultra-thin beauty ideals.

"Anorexia and bulimia have been for many years diseases that have not been recognized as such. It was sort of a veil of unspoken and unrecognized problems," said Giovanna Melandri, minister for young people and sports.

"So what we really needed to do was to take away the veil to make sure young people, young girls and young boys, know that they can die," she told AP Television News... finish article

Controversy as a Fashion Statement New Nolita Campaign Features Nude Anorexic; Exploitation or Debate?

For the past year, a number of fashion trade groups have been trying to clean up the industry's image by pushing designers to use healthier, heavier-looking models.

Now, an ad campaign from an Italian label, Nolita, has done the opposite, using images of an emaciated 27-year-old woman, nude, with the line, "No. Anorexia." Double-page spreads of the ads debuted Monday in major Italian newspapers along with prominent downtown billboards in cities such as Milan, Naples and Rome, coinciding with Milan's fashion week. Vogue Italia launched "Vogue Curvy," a special section on its website devoted to celebrating fuller-figured beauty.
